REIGN OF CONTEXTI, VENICE

Alongside the 57th Venice Biennale, for the Anima Mundi opening on May 13th, 2017, Kelly Malone performed an iteration of her ‘Reign of Contexti’ as the Queen of Contexti in the Venetian palace, Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi (built in the 16th Century). She rained contexti (her handwritten and torn journal pages) by waving a Venetian fan under her reigning hand which held the contexti. The airflow of the fan lifted the contexti from this reigning hand and she proceeded to walk into a rain of contexti. Performing her writing in silence, and working within the diegetic sound scape, her performance considered the deconstruction of the written stage.
